What Are Photos?

Photo: A relevant image or picture that is clicked using a camera and then enhanced via digital means. 

Google Business Profile photographs are the pictures that are visible in a business listing. They can be taken from a smartphone or camera, and optionally enhanced on a computer using image design software tools. 

These photos, pictures, and images are then uploaded to the GBP for all to see. They can also be stored on Google Photos or Google Drive for future use and/or enhancements.

Adding quality and relevant photos to your business profile and website helps enhance its authority.

The two most common file formats for photos are JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) and PNG (Portable Network Graphics).

Additionally, Google has developed a format known as WebP (Web Picture).

According to GBP guidelines, your photos look best on Google if they meet the following standards:

  • Format: JPG or PNG.
  • Size: Between 10 KB and 5 MB.
  • Recommended resolution: 720 px tall, 720 px wide.
  • Minimum resolution: 250 px tall, 250 px wide.
  • Quality: The photo should be in focus and well lit, and have no significant alterations or excessive use of filters. In other words, the image should represent reality.

For videos, the maximum size is 100 MB. Videos can be up to 30 seconds with a 720p or higher resolution.

Anyone can access these photos and videos by clicking on the image with ‘See Photos’ on it at the top of the listing. It is next to the company map.

All GBP photos are public and the people viewing the listing can sort the photos and videos by all, those uploaded by the owner, by the customer, or just the videos.

Photos can be geotagged with metadata. A geotag is an electronic tag that assigns a geographic location to the photo.

Photos on the Google Business Profile are of five types:

  • Interior
  • Exterior
  • At work
  • Team
  • Identity

Apart from these attributes, there are also videos and a 360 Street View photo that can be uploaded to the listing. The latter showcases the 360-degree view of the area outside the company.

‘Interior’ photos are taken inside the company.

‘Exterior’ photos show the outside of the company.

‘At work’ photos are those taken while people are doing their jobs.

‘Team’ photos are pictures of the team together.

‘Identity’ photos refer to the cover photo for the listing and the logo of the company.

Photos don’t always have to be taken by the owner (By Owner). Other people can also upload their photos to someone else’s listing as well (By Customer) or share them as part of a review of the business. However, they can be reported and removed by Google if found to be inappropriate.

Photos are critical because they establish the legitimacy, authority, and genuineness of your business to users and Google, so be sure to take photos at regular intervals and upload them to your GBP.

You can also use these photos on your website and as images in your GBP posts.
