What Is Service Area?
Service Area: The location/locations where a company provides services.
Each service area could be limited to just one neighborhood, but sometimes it could be the entire city or county, depending on your ability to service a wider area. The service area can include ZIP codes, postcodes, districts, counties, or even states but we recommend that it be realistic.
Adding a service area indicates that the company can either physically get to the customers living in this area or that the customers in this area could visit the store within a reasonable time to get what they are looking for. GMB is meant for businesses that work with local or ‘near me’ clients and adding a huge 50 or 100-mile service area radius defeats this purpose.
On a GMB listing, the service area is depicted above the title, usually on the upper right corner. Clicking on it takes the person to the company map.
There will be a service area for places such as jewelry stores, dental clinics, and attorney offices even though they have a set location.
The feature is even more useful for businesses who visit local customers but don’t service them at their business address. These kinds of businesses are known as Service Area Businesses (SABs).
For example, locksmiths, plumbers, and maids all come to the customer’s place and offer services. By adding the right service areas, people will know whether or not the business can reach them in time.
The service can also be used by businesses that both serve customers at their address as well as deliver to customers. For example, a restaurant where people can eat food but where food can also be delivered to the customer.
The service area can be listed or depicted visually in the form of either a map embed from Google Maps or as a custom map created by the company. For SABs, the service area will be visible on the listing on the company map. Otherwise, only the store’s location will be visible.
With GMB and Maps being all about local, the service areas are one of the most important parts of the listing, so it’s essential to perform extensive analysis and pick them with care.
Note: If the GMB is a pure storefront, you should not add the 20 service areas. GMBs that only serve customers who come to their address, for example, a restaurant that doesn’t offer takeout, a grocery store or shopping market that doesn’t delivery products, or a doctor or dentist that doesn’t pay a visit to the patient’s house for a health checkup, then do not add service areas.
