What Is Speed?

Speed: How fast a website loads.

Site speed is the amount of time it takes for a website to load and for all elements like text, graphics, and video to appear on the page. The quicker the better.

Speed is a technical SEO component and is usually measured in seconds.

There are certain parameters used for analyzing website speed:

Site Loading Time – The most important parameter is the fully loaded time (FLT). This is the amount of time it takes for the entire website to load. A load time of four seconds or less is considered a good fully loaded time.

Time to first byte – Abbreviated as TTFB, this is the amount of time it takes for the first byte to load on a site after the user visits it.

Total page size – This is how large a website is in bytes. This may include text, images, multimedia, or other files on different pages.

Requests – An HTTP request is what happens when a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, etc.) asks the server for information about a webpage. The higher the number of requests, the more the server has to work and the slower the speed.

Different pages will have different load times based on total page size, amount of content on the page, number of images, and more. They also vary based on browsers and devices. The load time for a site accessed on mobile will be different from the time on a computer.

Certain things that slow down a website include videos, large images, maps, and Business.Site embeds. Take care to compress them or make them load at the end instead of the beginning.

Various tools allow you to check page speed including Google’s page speed insights for desktop and mobile. Some other popular speed checking tools are GTMetrix, Pingdom, Dareboost, and WebPageTest.

Slow speed almost is almost always the result of a technical problem. Compressing images, removing bloat (excess content), and fixing structural errors are some ways to speed up your site.

DigitalBull GO Tip: Instead of worrying too much about getting high vanity scores on GTMetrix or Google Page Speed Insights, Focus on getting the website to load fast.
