What Is On-Page?

On-Page: A certain webpage or the elements of that particular page.

On-page refers to everything visible on a particular page of a website, including both the content and HTML parts of the page.

On-page SEO can be designed to work as a powerful rules-based technique that can yield good results when executed to perfection. Relevant pages will show up higher on the search results if this simple yet effective internal technique is diligently implemented.

With on-page SEO, each individual page is treated as a separate entity and all the various segments of the page or elements of that page are fixed or improved upon. This includes headings, paragraphs (body text), and images.

Here is a checklist of on-page elements that need to be optimized:

Headings are the main heading (H1) for the entire body of content and subheadings (H2, H3, H4, etc.) for paragraphs and subparagraphs.

Alt-attributes are used for the images and videos to describe them better and are a critical element of Image SEO. This can help in appearing on Google image results.

Meta tags are the page title and description of the pages that appear in the search results. The description is also called the meta description. This is not to be confused with the GMB description. Page titles and descriptions are measured in characters or pixels and each letter, symbol, and space is 1 character. 1 pixel = 0.125 character.

The page’s URL that appears in the address bar can be considered a minor on-page element. Other elements that impact the success of on-page include schema, links and call-to-action buttons.

The HTML of on-page covers the coding, backend tags (<strong>, <body>, etc.), structured data markup for rich results in the search snippet (also known as ‘schema’), and hyperlinks both to another page on the same site or another site.

As covered at the very beginning of this book (seems aeons ago), a keyword is a word or phrase that describes the focus of the page, such as ‘plumber Norfolk VA’ or ‘New York taxi service’.

The ability to smartly use keywords in meta tags, headings, and alt-attributes in a natural manner without stuffing them is critical for on-page SEO.

DigitalBull GO Tip: Review and complete or update the on-page tasks for key pages at the beginning of the project and/or preferably after new content has been added.
